Invasion ofendovascular trophoblast and remodelling of spiral arteryare crucial actions of normal placental development.Non-fulfilment of these processes plays a leading role inthe development of preeclampsia. Vascular endothelialgrowth factor (VEGF) is produced by extravillous tropho-blastic tissue and decidual cell population is a well-knownangiogenic growth which plays a fundamental role inplacental pathogenesis of PE. Annexin A2 (ANXA2) is aprofibrinolytic protein receptor required for plasminolysis, which is an important step in the formation of new bloodvessel along with VEGF. Role of ANXA2 is poorly studied incontext with human reproductive disease like preeclamp-sia. The purpose of the present study is to examine theexpression and association of VEGF and ANXA2 in the termplacentas of pregnancies with and without PE.Methods:The study group comprised of placental tissuesprocured from gestations with PE (n=30) and without (n=20)PE. The expression of VEGF and ANXA2 in the placentalvillous tissue was evaluated quantitatively by means of IHC,western blotting and reverse transcriptase-polymerasechain reaction (RT-PCR).Results:Our IHC, western blotting and RT-PCR analysisillustrated the significant decrease in the expression ofVEGF and ANXA2 in PE group compared with the normo-tensive control group (p<0.005). We observed statisticallysignificant positive correlation among the expression ofANXA2 and VEGF in placentas of normotensive controlgroup (p<0.0001).Conclusions:The diminished expression of VEGF andANXA2 in placenta may be associated with the defectiveangiogenesis and which may possibly play a vital role in PEpathogenesis. Keywords:Annexin A2; placenta vascular endothelialgrowth factor; preeclampsia.IntroductionPreeclampsia (PE) is a multisystem placental inter-mediated disorder affecting 5–8% of pregnancies entirely*Corresponding author: Praveenkumar Shetty, Professor, Departmentof Biochemistry, K S Hegde Medical Academy, Nitte (Deemed to beUniversity), Mangalore, India; and Nitte University Centre for ScienceEducation and Research, Mangalore, India, Phone:+91 8242204292/303, Fax:+91 8242204308, E-mail: shettybp@hotmail.com. https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1201-2637Komal Ruikar,Department of Physiology, Shri BM Patil MedicalCollege, Hospital & Research Centre, BLDE (Deemed to be University),Vijaypur, India; and Department of Physiology, SDM College ofMedical Sciences & Hospital, Shri Dharmasthala ManjunatheshwaraUniversity, Dharwad, IndiaManjunatha Aithala,Department of Physiology, Shri BM Patil MedicalCollege, Hospital & Research Centre, BLDE (Deemed to be University),Vijaypur, IndiaUdupi Shastry Dinesh,Department of Pathology, SDM College ofMedical Sciences & Hospital Dharwad, Shri DharmasthalaManjunatheshwara University, Dharwad, IndiaAnil Bargale,Department of Biochemistry, SDM College of MedicalSciences & Hospital, Shri Dharmasthala ManjunatheshwaraUniversity, Dharwad, IndiaRoshni Sadashiv,Department of Anatomy, SDM College of MedicalSciences & Hospital, Shri Dharmasthala ManjunatheshwaraUniversity, Dharwad, IndiaSarathkumar Edachery veedu,Department of Biochemistry, K S HegdeMedical Academy, Nitte (Deemed to be University), Mangalore, IndiaVitthal Khode,Department of Physiology, SDM College of MedicalSciences & Hospital, Shri Dharmasthala ManjunatheshwaraUniversity, Dharwad, IndiaAsha Neravi,Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, SDM Collegeof Medical Sciences & Hospital, Shri DharmasthalaManjunatheshwara University, Dharwad, IndiaPrakash Patil,Central Research Laboratory, K S Hegde MedicalAcademy, Nitte (Deemed to be University), Mangalore, IndiaJ Basic Clin Physiol Pharmacol 2021; aop
