Background and objectives Recently, Serum ferritin has sparked widespread interest in the pathogenesis and complications of diabetes. The present study was undertaken to estimate the levels of serum ferritin in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and to correlate levels of serum ferritin with Glycemic status of Diabetes Mellitus. Methodology The present one and half year year cross sectional study was carried out in the Department of Medicine, BLDE University’s Shri B M Patil medical college and research center , Vijayapur from January 2014 to june 2015. A total of 131 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were studied. Results Maximum number of cases were in the age group of 51 to 60 that is 54 patients (41.2%). The mean age of study population was 53.48 ± 8.56 years. Out of 131 patients, 70 (53.43%) were males and 61 patients (46.56%) were females, with a ratio of male to female 1.15:1. In 15 patients (11.5%), the levels of serum ferritin were high, in 55 patients (41.9%) the levels were upper normal. Most of the patients had fasting and post prandial glucose abnormality (96% and 95% respectively). Conclusion and interpretation There was an positive association between serum ferritin levels and HbA1c in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Higher serum ferritin levels were associated with poor glycemic control. Additionally we observed a significant correlation of serum xi ferritin levels with variable factors body mass index, fasting blood sugar, post prandial blood sugar, high density lipoprotein (HDL), triglycerides and low density lipoprotein (LDL). However, we did not find significant correlation with variable factors age, gender, duration of diabetes and total cholesterol.en_US
