Abstract: Stroke is a growing disease and it is the second common cause of death in the world after coronary heart disease especially in the elderly. Uric acid is the ultimate catabolite of purine metabolism in human and higher primates. It exists in the extracellular compartment as sodium urate, and it is cleared from the plasma through the kidney. In patients with acute stroke hyperuricemia was significantly higher than normal population. Hyperuricemia has been associated with increased amounts of triglycerides and LDL cholesterol.
